Mandarin Oriental Hotels is a distinguished name in luxury hospitality, with over 50 years of excellence in the industry. The journey began with the opening of its first property, The Mandarin, in Hong Kong in 1963. This hotel quickly gained recognition for its exceptional service and was the tallest building on the island at the time, achieving the status of a historic landmark.
In 1974, the group partially acquired The Oriental in Bangkok, a legendary name in hospitality. This acquisition led to the creation of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, uniting these two iconic properties under the well-known fan logo.
Over the next two decades, the group expanded throughout Asia, opening additional Mandarin Oriental Hotels celebrated for their luxurious accommodations, outstanding facilities, and some of the finest restaurants and bars in the region.
The group made its global debut in 1987 with its first property in the US, located in San Francisco, and later acquired its flagship in London in the mid-1990s. By the year 2000, it further expanded its portfolio with the acquisition of the prestigious Rafael Group of hotels, increasing the number of unique properties from 14 to 20 across three continents.
Today, Mandarin Oriental features an extensive collection of holistic spas that blend Asian and Western treatment techniques. With 13 Forbes “Five-Star” spas, the group holds the highest number of such ratings of any hotel brand worldwide.
In 2003, the iconic Mandarin Oriental, New York opened, followed by the Washington D.C. property in 2004. The group continued to grow in Hong Kong, launching a second luxury hotel, The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, in 2005. This modern property, with its spacious facilities and impeccable service, became an instant success.
Mandarin Oriental’s growth extended beyond accommodations. The group developed expertise in creating exceptional in-house restaurants and bars, earning a total of 27 Michelin stars across 17 restaurants in its 33 hotels worldwide.
Between 2006 and 2010, the group expanded to Prague, Boston, Macau, and Barcelona, while also renovating its flagship property in Hong Kong. In 2011, it entered the Paris market, followed by new hotels in Guangzhou and Shanghai in 2013.
From 2014 to 2019, the group established luxury landmarks in Taipei, Bodrum, Milan, Marrakech, Dubai, Doha, and Beijing, among others. Additionally, they announced several new projects, including residential properties in New York, Istanbul, Dallas, Tel Aviv, Nanjing, and Lake Lucerne, as well as managing the iconic Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi in 2020.
