LXS Luxury Travel is proud to introduce Kempinski Hotels, a brand steeped in history and renowned for crafting unforgettable experiences since its founding in 1897. With a rich heritage that reflects the elegance of the Belle Epoque and the opulence of the 1970s, Kempinski has evolved alongside changing trends, seamlessly blending European luxury with local flavors across its global locations.
Founding in Berlin (1907)
The journey began when Berthold Kempinski, a wine merchant, opened a restaurant for Berlin’s elite on Leipziger Strasse. It quickly became a social hotspot, renowned for its exquisite wines and seasonal delicacies. The Emperor’s Hall, inaugurated by Kaiser Wilhelm II, epitomized the grandeur of this establishment.
Cultural Hub Emergence (1928)
By the late 1920s, Kempinski’s new location on Kurfuerstendamm became a nightly hub of entertainment, solidifying its reputation with unique dining experiences, including the Haus Vaterland at Potsdamer Platz, which showcased cuisines from around the globe.
Entry into Hospitality (1961)
Under the leadership of Dr. Friedrich Unger, Berthold Kempinski’s grandson, the restaurant transformed into Berlin’s first luxury hotel, quickly becoming a favorite among notable figures, including US President John F. Kennedy, who famously declared, “Ich bin ein Berliner” during his stay.
A New Luxury Era (1977)
The 1970s marked a shift in luxury travel, with Kempinski expanding throughout Europe, opening Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten in Munich and Hotel Gravenbruch near Frankfurt. These grand hotels, characterized by lavish decor and top-tier amenities, heralded a new Golden Age of luxury.
Expansion into China (1992)
As China opened its doors to the world, Kempinski established its presence in Beijing’s diplomatic district, catering to European business travelers while providing local flavors to adventurers exploring iconic sites like the Forbidden City.
Middle Eastern Ventures (2005)
In the mid-2000s, Kempinski expanded into the Arabian Peninsula, debuting luxurious properties in Ajman, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai. The brand’s ability to offer first-class experiences infused with Arabian culture paved the way for further growth in the region.
African Safari Adventures (2013)
Kempinski launched its first luxury safari camp in Kenya’s Masai Mara, immersing guests in traditional ceremonies and wildlife encounters. This expansion into Africa continued with new hotels in Nairobi, Accra, Djibouti, and the stunning Kempinski Seychelles Resort Baie Lazare.
Atlantic Crossings (2022)
Kempinski made its mark in the Americas with Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski La Habana, recognized as Havana’s first true luxury property. This was followed by expansions in Cuba and the Caribbean, culminating in Kempinski’s entry into North America with a stunning resort in Cancún, Mexico.
